Weekly Bulletin

Bulletin Announcements for Sunday, February 5th, 2012 – Fifth Sunday after Epiphany

WELCOME, GUESTS, TO ADVENT - Information about our ministries is available on the Welcome Cart at the east entrance, or on our webpage (adventolathe.org).  If you are interested in joining our faith community, please speak to a pastor or call the church office.  Our next New Member Orientation luncheon is next Sunday, February 12th.

PASTORS CLASS TODAY - “Jesus, Heal Me/My Friend/My Child!”  In honor of the Super Bowl, Bishop Emeritus Charlie Maahs will offer an overview of the stories of healings in Mark’s Gospel, in which healing was the primary part of Jesus’ ministry.  We meet in the library at 9:30 a.m.  All are welcome to join the class.

CALL FOR PALMS - The season of Lent is right around the corner. We begin the 40 day journey on Ash Wednesday (February 22,) with services of Holy Communion including the imposition of ashes at both 6:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. that day.  Please bring your palms from previous years to be burned for the ashes used in worship.  Palm should be here by Feb. 19th.

PRAYERS FROM CONFIRMATION GROUPS - What’s up, God?  Thanks for helping us through this week.  We praise you for everything good.  We ask you to be with those who have been going through tough times.  Be with families who have relatives that have died.  Bring peace into the world.  Thank you for listening and all that you give us.  Thank you, God, for being with us.  Please forgive us for our mistakes, and sins.  Thank for our friends, family and all those who guide us towards you. Please hold the snow until next winter.

CHILDREN IN WORSHIP - We are in the Season of Epiphany.  What is the main color you see?  How many candles are lit today?  Can you see any stars? See if you can find any small, red roses tucked anywhere up front - for they remind us of the presence of the Holy Spirit.  Parents bring your children to the rail after worship and let them look more closely.

THE LUTHERAN MAGAZINE is available for this year at a special congregational rate of $10, which includes 12 issues and a small contribution to provide additional single copies for visitors.  Please make your check payable to Advent, and mark “The Lutheran” in the memo line.

MONDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY - Join us each Monday at 7 p.m. in the Advent library for a conversational study on the Gospel text for the coming Sunday’s sermon. This week we’ll be discussing Mark 1:40-45 (Epiphany 6.)

WEDNESDAYS AT ONE meets in the Library to read and reflect on the books of the Old Testament.  Bring your Bible and your questions and come read with us. Can’t be there?  Follow the lecture points on the Advent website.

STRETCH & PRAY AND YOGA - Join us for beginning yoga group on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m.  Need an easier place to start?  Stretch & Pray can be done in street clothes and by any fitness level and meets on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 9 a.m. All of these classes meet in the Advent narthex.

WEDNESDAY DINNERS - Take a break from cooking and join us to enjoy a homemade meal here at church on Wednesday nights before program activities begin. This week menu for Feb. 8th is penne alfredo with chicken, salad and vegetables. The cost is $5 per person, with a family maximum of $15. Lots of ways to RSVP: call Kari at the church office (913-681-2074), sign up on the kiosk or fill out a reservation form and drop it in the offering box. Standing reservations are also available.

FIRST BIBLE CLASS - The Faith Stepping Stone #4 class is open to anyone who would like to walk through the entire Bible in three evenings.  Come and bring your Bible and learn what’s in each and every book of the Bible.  Best response to this class?  “This was the BEST Bible class I have ever had!”  Need some basic Bible?  This is the class for you, easy and fun. Starts Feb 28.

WEAVERS OF THE WORD meets on the first Sunday of the month for Bible study and the third Sunday of each month for book discussion. Check the calendar for the most up-to-date planned meetings.  In February we’ll discuss Prayers for Sale by Sandra Dallas.  Plan on joining us those Sunday evenings at Starbucks on 151st and Metcalf. If you would like to join or have questions please contact Julie Stuckey at 913-782-0120.

ADVENT SUNDAY SCHOOL KIDS are on a mission to help kids in need in our community. During the month of February we will be collecting food for “Snacks in Packs” as our designated offering.  The food we collect will be used for local “Backpack Projects” which send weekend backpacks home with kids from schools who might otherwise go hungry without the availability of school breakfasts and lunches on Saturday and Sunday. If you have questions call the church office (913-681-2074).

TRUFFLE SHUFFLE - The Jana E. Pinker Memorial Foundation presents the 13th Annual Truffle Shuffle on Saturday, March 3 at 8:30 a.m. on the Johnson County Community College campus. The early registration fee is $25 through Feb. 20th.

ADVENT’S 2012 FAMILY GIVING NUMBERS - Each family has a unique number, which is used to track your annual giving, so please make sure that you put it on your checks from now on. Family numbers are posted on the kiosk in the Narthex. No offering envelopes will be provided for 2012. Unnumbered envelopes are available in the pew backs and in the narthex for your use, but you will need to supply your own number, either on the envelope or on your check in the memo line. Don’t forget that another simple way to give to Advent is through Thrivent’s Simply Giving (automated withdrawal) program.

CURIOUS ABOUT ADVENT’S SIMPLY GIVING PROGRAM? You can help us by signing up for automated withdrawals through the Simply Giving program. You may pick up an application form for this program outside the church office on the table near the nursery or by calling the church office to have one emailed to you. This is such a simple way to make sure your offering to Advent doesn’t get forgotten.
